village style hand water pump

I have a village style hand pump fixed to a oak water barrel .water goes into barrel via rainwater pipe. this has worked well, but it has now stopped pumping . ihave taken pump off , cleaned and regreased every thing , refitted but will not work . there is no purchase on the stroke when you operate the leaver, it,s just slack. please has anyone any ideas.. thanks geoff
